Is Car Service Different From Mot Test?

If you want a long and healthy life for your vehicle, you need to make sure that you maintain the car regularly. Your user manual recommends regular car servicing to keep your car in top condition every time. Moreover, the Government has made some standard rules to keep your vehicle roadworthy. Therefore, it is quite natural if a driver feels confused because of these two vital aspects of car safety.

In this blog, we are going to explain the basic difference between the Car Service Cheltenham and MOT test to clear the confusion.

When do you need a car service?

Your user manual says that your need to visit your garage regularly for car service at specified intervals. These visits will help you maintain the physical condition of your vehicle and reduce the risks of breakdowns. The guidelines of a car service are set by your carmaker. While you visit the garage to get your car serviced, your mechanic is going to check your car thoroughly to have a deep understanding of the overall mechanical health of your vehicle.

Why is regular car service beneficial?

If you keep your car fully serviced, your car is going to run on the road for a longer time. Moreover, it is supposed to remain at the peak level of performance during its lifespan. Furthermore, well-serviced vehicles do not stop working suddenly in the middle of roads. Minor faults are caught by the mechanic and you never face major faults due to your ignorance.

Types of car service

Mainly there are three types of car service: Interim car service, full service, and major service.

Interim service: This service is done after six months. This service includes the change of oil and filter. The mechanic is supposed to check the steering, brakes, and suspension as well.

Full service: This service is done annually and includes a complete inspection of the vehicle. Important fluids are also checked during the service.

Major Service: This service is recommended every two years. This service is supposed to cover all areas of maintenance.

When do you need an MOT?

The MOT test is a mandatory annual test. Every car driver has to submit their three years old vehicles for the test to comply with the rules and regulations of the UK.

The MOT is a visual inspection and the aim of the tester is usually to check the roadworthiness of the vehicle. The tester is supposed to check the car components that are specified in the pre-defined list.

If the driver is successful in proving that the car has no major or dangerous faults, he is supposed to get an MOT certificate that is valid only for one year. Next year, the driver needs to get a new certificate.

If the car fails its test, the driver needs to repair all the major or dangerous faults with the help of the same center or his desired garage.

Car drivers in the UK are not allowed to drive a car without an MOT certificate. Similarly, they are not able to run their vehicle with an invalid certificate.

To get the certificate, a car driver requires registering to his nearby service center that is working as the MOT center.

Benefits of MOT test

Usually, drivers avoid proper maintenance of their vehicles. The bad condition of cars is responsible for several road accidents. Therefore, the Government wants to make sure that all car drivers follow strict guidelines of the MOT test to prove that they are traveling in a safe vehicle.

As the MOT is a legal requirement, most drivers follow the guidelines and submit their vehicles to MOT centers. As a result, the number of road accidents due to ill-conditioned cars is decreasing.

Undoubtedly, MOT Cheltenham is a mandatory test but it is not similar to a car service. You should not avoid car service only because of the reason that your car has passed the MOT test. Both of them are different. Car service includes repairs and changes as well but the MOT test is only an inspection. Thus, do not be confused and submit your vehicle for both the MOT test and car service.
