The Procedure for Inspecting
A. Free Play 1 Lightly turn the steering wheel left and right as far as possible without moving the road wheel while the road wheels are on the ground pointing straight ahead.
Examine the amount of wiggle room that is available around the perimeter of the steering wheel.
Note that play that is set off by wear or maladjustment should not muddle up with apparent play that is set off by the construction of the mechanism. For example, play that is set off by the deflection of flexible joints or spring compression in external power steering systems should not be confused with play that is set off by the construction of the mechanism.
Take note that the steering wheel free play limit is a basic rule that applies to steering wheels with conventional diameters (380mm). Larger or smaller diameter steering wheels should be cast off to establish lower or higher limitations, respectively.
Justification for Being Turned Down
1. A point on the rim of the steering wheel moves without the road wheels moving for more than: a. 75 millimetres for steering systems that do not use rack and pinion; b. 13 millimetres for steering systems that use rack and pinion.
Note: If the steering wheel and the rack are set on by multiple joints, a movement of up to 48 millimetres on a wheel with a diameter of 380 millimetres can be well thought out acceptable.
